Supervisors of Family Peer Advocates who are not credentialed peers themselves can access the same self-paced, online training modules that FPAs complete as part of their Provisional Credential pathway. The “Family Peer Advocate (FPA) Orientation Training for Supervisors” will help to orient you to the intent of family peer services, the roles of family peers, and familiarize you with FPA training and credentialing requirements.

Family Peer Support Services (FPSS) are an array of formal and informal activities and supports provided to families caring for/raising a child/youth who is experiencing social, emotional, medical, developmental, substance use, and/or behavioral challenges in their home, school, placement, and/or community. FPSS provides a structured, strength-based relationship between a Family Peer Advocate (FPA) and the parent/family member/caregiver for the benefit of the child/youth. A FPA is an individual with lived experience who is certified or credentialed as a Family Peer. Services are delivered in a trauma-informed, culturally and linguistically competent manner.

The need for FPSS must be recommended by a Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts and included within a treatment plan. Activities included must be intended to achieve the identified goals or objectives as set forth in the child/youth’s treatment plan. Services and interventions must be provided in accordance with Limitations and Exclusions.

Family is defined as the primary caregiving unit and is inclusive of the wide diversity of primary caregiving units in our culture. Family is a birth, foster, adoptive, or self-created unit of people residing together, with significant attachment to the individual, consisting of adult(s) and/or child(ren), with adult(s) performing duties of parenthood/caregiving for the child(ren) even if the individual is living outside of the home.

The Family Peer Advocate (FPA) Code of Ethics establishes clear standards of conduct, facilitates ethical decision making and fosters accountability. The objective of this recorded webinar was to learn about the FPA Code of Ethics. Together, we considered the ethical and professional principles of the FPA throughout their role. FPAs understood how to approach colleagues regarding ethical concerns and dilemmas. In cases of a violation, they learned how to file a complaint and understand the process for investigation, review and appeal. FPAs will be equipped with the knowledge to uphold the Code of Ethics, thereby fostering an environment of integrity and ethical conduct.

The Managed Care Technical Assistance Center (MCTAC) hosted its 3rd Annual Documentation Event on May 13, 2026, in Albany. The event focused on supporting behavioral health providers in strengthening documentation practices, exploring AI innovations to support effective and compliant documentation, understanding audit and compliance trends, and navigating evolving documentation standards and requirements. Attendees also had opportunities to engage with EHR vendors, network with peers across the behavioral health system, and connect with OMH and OASAS state representatives.
